PUNE: The city crime branch on Thursday busted a

sex racket

operating from a lodge at Bhekarinagar in

Hadapsar

and rescued six women, including four from West Bengal.

An offence has been registered against three men with the Hadapsar police on the charge of forcing the women into sex trade. A team of the social security cell (crime branch), led by inspector Vaishali Chandgude, raided the lodge on Thursday afternoon following a tip-off received by constable Shashank Khade.

The social security cell rescued 116 women, including five minors, who were forced into sex trade last year. As many as 38 cases were registered with various police stations.

In 2019, the police for the first time in 10 years had stumbled upon a cross-border human trafficking racket operating from the city following the arrest of a purse seller, who also worked as a sex racket agent, from the red light area in Budhwar Peth in November.

The police had launched the search for the man following the rescue of a 16-year-old Bangladeshi girl from a brothel in Budhwar Peth.

(The victims’ identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
